Structured data's actual role in getting an agent to trust and use your page is more contested than most SEO advice claims. The most careful independent study on the question — an analysis of 1,006 pages across 75 commercial queries and 730 real AI citations, published February 2026 — found that Product and Review schema populated with real, concrete facts (price, rating, specifications) was cited by ChatGPT and Gemini at 61.7% versus 41.6% for generic, decorative schema types, a real and statistically significant gap [5]. Most visits to most small business websites today are still a person with a mouse, not an agent. Rebuilding a site around a subscriber slice of one browser, in one market, is getting ahead of the actual traffic.
Clean semantic structure, accurate facts, and properly labeled forms aren't agent-specific investments — they're the same work that improves accessibility, page speed, and ordinary search performance. Building for an agent that might only be 5% of your traffic today costs nothing extra if you were already going to build the site properly.
A lot of SEO advice treats adding schema markup as a guaranteed multiplier for AI visibility. The most careful independent study on it found the opposite of a clean story: attribute-rich schema helped, generic schema barely registered, and plain old Google rank still dominated everything. Spend the budget on the site actually working, not on a markup checklist sold as a shortcut.
Build a site a person and an agent can both complete an action on: real semantic structure, facts that match reality, forms with working labels, and a human fallback that still works when any of it stalls.
